Simple tips to Save the battery life of Laptop

Save Battery life

The world is shifting to mobile computing. With smartphones and tablets getting almost as powerful as PC’s, it’s no wonder that desktop sales are declining. However, there’s nothing like a laptop computer. The power and functionality of a desktop, in a portable package. When we’re looking to buy a laptop, battery backup is one of the biggest factors to consider. Be it a laptop, netbook or ultra book, there’s always a few things we can do to further extend the battery life. By keeping a few simple things in mind or tweaking settings a bit, we can make sure the battery lasts longer. So here’s how to increase laptop battery backup in 8 easy ways!
1. Unplug external devices and empty disc drives: External devices like a USB external HDD, an iPod or mouse use power from the laptop to run. Therefore, unplug them so that all the battery power is used just for your laptop. If you want to watch a movie from removable media, copy it to your HDD and unplug the external device. Not only is it faster, that’s one less device using up previous battery power. Similarly, if you’re not using the optical disc drive, remove any discs from it because even if it’s not being read from or written on, the disc drive keeps spinning and using power.
2. Update drivers: Although it’s not considered a direct connection, most newer drivers help devices perform more efficiently and thus consume less power. Furthermore, they can even offload processing tasks to specific components and not stress the CPU.
3. Tone down the screen brightness: Probably the easiest and most obvious way to increase laptop battery backup is to reduce screen brightness. The same applies to any mobile device, in fact. Turn down the brightness to a comfortable, usable level and of course don’t make it bright enough to light up a whole room.
4. Avoid multimedia content and using speakers: Gaming or watching high def movies on battery power is not a good idea, it eats up battery really fast. The graphics card works overtime and requires more power to render graphics or frames in a movie, specially high definition ones. As much as possible, mute the sounds as well or use earphones/headphones while watching a movie.
5. Get rid of bloatware: First and foremost, get rid of all the useless software that comes bundled with laptops. You really don’t need all those monitors, recovery solutions and such, there are far better, lighter and free data recovery alternatives available. All of these programs running in the background not only slow down your computer, but also use up precious processing power which in turn depletes the battery. Even make sure that there are only essential items in startup, you don’t need iTunes Helper, Adobe Updater and stuff to startup with your PC.
6. Turn off connectivity services: When you’re not surfing the internet through Wi-Fi or transferring data through Bluetooth, turn them off to save battery power. Turning them on or off is just a key press away on modern laptops and shouldn’t be too cumbersome. Both these services require considerable power.
7. Hibernate, not Sleep: If you’re looking to resume work after a break, make sure to put the laptop to Hibernate and not Sleep. Sleep mode simply turns off drives and display but memory and such keeps running. Thus, battery is still being consumed. Hibernate on the other hand, saves the current state and turns off components, thus power is conserved.
8. Tweak power options: Laptops have multiple power options and some even come with company optimized ones. Try using the power saver option when you want to extend battery life, and change the time before the laptop switches off display and hard disks or goes to sleep. About 15 minutes or so will do just fine. Although, keep in mind that if you select to turn off the hard drives after a certain time, ongoing operations might be interrupted. So if you’re doing something important involving constant use of the hard drives on battery power, make sure to move the mouse once in a while.
So that was how to increase laptop battery backup in 8 easy ways. Individually they might not make much of a difference, but if applied together, it can considerably increase battery backup and life. A common misconception is that laptop batteries have to be completely charged and discharged to ensure a long life. This is not true, modern lithium ion batteries are not affected by partial charges and discharges, although older nickel metal hydride batteries used to be. Do let us know if there’s anything else you do to save battery and as always, comments and suggestions are welcome!

ATM, now more than withdraw and deposit of cash

ATM

The ATM is no longer just a machine to withdraw and deposit cash. In fact, it’s a mini bank branch where you can do a host of financial activities and, that too, at your own convenience. Here are some of the financial transactions that you can do at your bank ATM.

Transfer funds. HDFC Bank allows you to link as many as 16 savings and/or current accounts to a single card. So, if you have multiple accounts linked to your ATM card, you can transfer money from one to another. ICICI Bank allows you to transfer up to Rs1 lakh per day. The cap may vary for other banks, but transfers are typically allowed between accounts in the same bank.

Open FDs. ICICI Bank lets you open a fixed deposit for any amount between Rs10,000 and Rs49,999 for tenures of 390, 590 and 990 days. The account will be opened within three working days of receiving the request. You will, subsequently, get a receipt for the payment within seven working days.

Pay your Tax. Register your debit card on your bank’s website for tax payments through ATM. The registration process validates your permanent account number (PAN) with the National Securities Depository.

The ATM income tax menu displays your PAN and asks for the tax amount. The amount is debited from your account and the ATM generates a receipt with a special number (SIN). After 24 hours, you can download a challan from the website by keying in the SIN. You will have to quote the SIN when you file your tax return online.

Utility bills. Using HDFC Bank’s BillPay facility, you can pay your bills for five different electricity consumer numbers, for five phone numbers and five insurance policy numbers. SBI, HSBC, Canara Bank and Axis Bank also offer this service. You may get a discount at certain bank ATMs.

Mobile recharge. By clicking on the instant mobile refill icon and choosing your service provider you can top up your prepaid phone within seconds.

Railway/airline tickets. You can buy railway tickets through SBI, Punjab National Bank and Bank of Baroda ATMs installed at stations. As you select the service and key in the details the ATM generates a printed ticket. Kingfisher airline tickets can be booked through Karur Vysya Bank and Indian Bank ATMs, but you need call customer care and get the booking reference number (BRN) first.

New Invisible Bike Helmet Saves your Life

Two women from Sweden have invented a bicycle helmet that remains invisible unless you need it, to solve the issues we all have with helmets — destroying hair or annoying them.
Invisible Helmet
Hovding, invented by Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin, is designed to inflate in a fraction of a second if you have an accident.
“It became mandatory for children to wear a helmet in Sweden and many people didn’t use them,” ABC Newsquoted Haupt as saying.
“We wanted to see if there was a way to change today’s helmets and wanted people to wear them by free will, not by law.
“We found out people wanted something that was almost invisible that didn't destroy their hair or annoy them, something with the possibility to change the looks of the helmet like they can with mobile phone shells and wigs,” she said.
The Hovding looks like a collar at first, worn around the neck. Inside it is an air bag, similar to the ones in your car.
According to the company’s website, shaped like a hood, the air bag is triggered when sensors — a combination of accelerometers and gyroscopes, pick up “abnormal movements of a bicyclist in an accident”.
The air bag can inflate and surround your head in 0.1 seconds. A small gas inflator fills it with helium. It needs to be powered on for which there is a power button and when it’s on, LEDs light up to tell you how much electricity you have to work the inflator.
There is also a sound to tell you it is powered on in case you cannot see it around your neck. That means you also have to charge the invisible helmet. It uses a microUSB port and the company says a charge lasts about a month during normal use.
The helmet also has a “black box”, similar to ones on airplanes, to record the movements of the cyclist, and recognize the acceleration and angular velocity during an accident.
The data is stored in the Hovding so the company can then see what sort of accident it was.
As with any wearable gadget, the women put effort into the design.
It is obviously more invisible than current helmets, and there’s an added bit to make it blend in even more. The collar has a removable liner so you can change it to match your shirt.
The company claims its invention is even safer.
“This helmet is so much better than others; the airbag and the helium gas is much softer inside than a traditional helmet,” Haupt said.
According to her, 20 people have been in real accidents with the helmet on in Sweden and other European countries, and it has worked perfectly.

Curiosity Rover Spots UFO on Mars!

Curiosity Rover Spots UFO

NASA’s Curiosity Rover seems to have captured something very bizarre on camera, including a strange white light dancing across the horizon of the red planet, and four blobs hovering in the sky.
While the images are certainly a curiosity, NASA and photography experts insist they are nothing more than blemishes on the images, picked up by the camera lens sitting on the rover at a distance of 350 million miles away.
So far, NASA has not commented on any of the strange sightings, but alien hunters have suggested that these are alien ships monitoring humans’ baby steps into the universe.
YouTube user Stephen Hannard ADGUK, part of a group called Alien Disclosure UK, spotted the anomalies on the NASA images, publicly available on the space agency’s website, and applied a series of filters to try to shed light on the mystery.
“Four objects caught by Mars Curiosity, very difficult to make out on original image so I have used a few filters to highlight,” the Daily Mail quoted him as saying, referring to the four pin-points of light pictured in the skies of Mars.
“What are these four objects? UFOs, Dust particles, or something else? As always you decide,” he said.
According to the Huffington Post, video analyst Marc Dantonio - who has worked on projects for the US government, said that these are simply ‘dead pixels’ in the image - a regular problem in the world of graphics.
Another video appears to show an object rising from the horizon, followed shortly afterwards by another small object.

Kim Kardashian awesome Threesome

Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian’s camp has rubbished claims that the reality star had a threesome with a male and female porn star 12 years ago.
Porn actor Julian St. Jox claimed that he shared a night of passion with the reality star when she was 20 years old back in September 2001 at a swingers’ party.
He said that Kardashian also romped with his date of the evening - a female porn star called Emily Ann
According to Star magazine, Kardashian is said to have arrived to the event on the arm of a black male.
At the time she was married to music producer Damon Thomas, although the publication says it is not clear if he was her date to the party.
“As soon as Kim walked in, everyone was looking. She wasn’t known at the time at all, not like today, but for everyone who frequented these parties, she was interesting because she was a new face,” the Daily Mail quoted St Jox.
The porn star said his date - Emily Ann - took a liking to Kardashian and propositioned her.
After some dirty dancing, Kardashian and her date joined the two porn stars in a private room later in the evening, and had sex.
“She knew what she was doing. She was very responsive to me,” he added.

Tom loses 14lbs within three weeks

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise, who has been focusing fully on his career since his split from Katie Holmes, is being urged by loved ones to slow down his work schedule for his health.

Pictures of the Hollywood hunk from last month have now shown what the strain of the collapse of his marriage has had on him, as he had shed 14 pounds.

The 'Mission Impossible' star looked quite beefed out, as pictures from the set of 'Oblivion 2' of July 10 revealed, compared to the slim figure that he cut three weeks later on July 28 in Malibu while having lunch with his lawyer.

According to reports, since Cruise got word of his wife's decision, he has dived deeper into work, and is ignoring concern from his family members.

"Tom's friends and family have urged him to take a break, but he has brushed off their concern," the Daily Mail quoted a source as telling Italian glamour magazine Grazia.

"He is refusing to slow down and is trying to soldier on. He doesn't seem to be himself. He hasn't been working out like he normally does and doesn't appear to be eating well at all. His clothes just hang off him.

"His way of dealing with this is to throw himself into his work, but as a result he's not looking after himself, and he risks cutting himself off from people who care about him and want to make sure he's OK," the source said.

What you can buy for the price of 1 Apple share?

Apple Stock in High
Apple is the world's most valuable company, ever. On Monday, its surging stock propelled the company's value to $624 billion, beating the previous record for market capitalisation set by Microsoft in the heady days of the internet boom.

After a four-month dip, Apple's stock hit new highs recently because of optimism around what is believed to be the impending launch of the iPhone 5, and possibly a smaller, cheaper iPad. Apple has been the world's most valuable company since the end of last year, when it surpassed Exxon Mobil Corp.

Apple's stock closed at $665.15 on Monday. That was an all-time high, up $17.04, or 2.6 percent, from Friday's close. If that seems to pricey for one share of Apple, here are five other ways you can spend $665:

  - A Steve Jobs-themed gift set: A St Croix black mock turtleneck ($185), a pair of dark stonewash Levi's 501 jeans ($48), a pair of grey New Balance 991 running shoes ($150), a 16 GB iPhone 4S ($199 with wireless service plan) and The Beatles Anthology Box Set ($80 on iTunes). Total: $662.

  - Fourteen cases of McIntosh apples (more than 1,040 pieces of fresh fruit) home-delivered from Fresh Direct. $650.

  - Two premium orchestra seats for Tony-award-winning Broadway musical "The Book of Mormon," plus refreshments during intermission. About $650.

  - One pair of Jimmy Choo apple-red patent-leather peep-toe pumps. $665.

  - Twenty-one shares of Microsoft stock. $645.54, at Monday's closing price.

  - Three BlackBerry PlayBook 7-inch tablets, once positioned by Research in Motion, as alternative to iPad. About $606 through Amazon.com.

One item you won't be able to purchase: the original Apple I computer. Though it carried a sticker price of $666.66 in 1976, it sold for $374,500 at a Sotheby's auction in June.

iPad Robot- A Human Alternate!

Telepresence Robot
Next time you are too busy to attend a party, you can send your virtual counterpart, an iPad robot instead! The 'Double' robot priced at $2,000 can turn your iPad into a 'virtual you' that can be sent anywhere in the world, the Daily Mail reported.

It can move around, all controlled by your own iPad, and even adjust its height to make sure you are always at eye level, its owners have said. The gadget could be used to attend meetings, meet friends for lunch, and even visit art galleries around the world.

"You can stay at eye level, whether sitting or standing, by adjusting your height remotely, which makes conversations fluid and real," the firm behind the design, 'Double Robotics' was quoted as saying by the paper.

"Efficient motors and lightweight design give 'Double' the ability to last all day without recharging the battery," it said. The robot is based around a single wheel, which balances the robot as it moves, rather like a Segway.

A retractable kickstand automatically deploys to conserve power when you are not moving around. The gadget has already proved a huge success , the firm said, with the first run already sold out, it said in a blog post.

Curiosity Rover Up-against Technical defects

Curiosity Rover pic:NASA

NASA's Curiosity rover, scheduled to take its maiden test drive on the surface of Mars, today reported its first setback when a sensor on its weather station was damaged.

However, the mission team says this is not a major problem and will merely degrade some measurements, not prevent them.

It is not certain how the damage occurred but engineers suspect surface stones thrown up during Curiosity's rocket-powered landing may have struck sensor circuits and broken the wiring.  NASA is describing the news as an isolated "disappointment" in what has otherwise been a spectacular start to the mission.

Javier Gomez-Elvira, the principal investigator on the broken instrumentation - the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (Rems) - said he was hopeful of finding a good way to get past the issue.

"We are working to recover as much functionality as possible," BBC News quoted Gomez-Elvira as saying.

Curiosity - also known as the Mars Science Laboratory, MSL - touched down in the equatorial Gale Crater two weeks ago.  It will operate on Mars for at least two Earth years, looking for evidence that the planet may once have had the conditions suitable to host microbial life.

Engineers are close to completing their programme of post-landing check-outs on Curiosity.
This has involved powering up all of the machine's instruments, and it was during this testing that the problem was found on Rems.

The weather station is a Spanish contribution to the rover project. It records air and ground temperature, air pressure and humidity, wind speed and direction, as well the amount of ultraviolet radiation falling on the surface.

These parameters are measured from sensors distributed around the rover, but a number are held on two finger-like mini-booms positioned halfway up the vehicle's camera mast. This is where the wind sensors are located.

Curiosity Rover gets ready for test drive.

Mars Rover Curiosity

Scientists were preparing to send Curiosity on its first test drive over the billion-year-old rocks of Mars and said a busted wind sensor wouldn't jeopardize its mission of determining whether life could exist there.

Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena turned four of the rover's six wheels in place this week in a successful "wheel wiggle" to test the steering for Wednesday's trek, mission manager Mike Watkins said.

The rover will move forward about 10 feet (3 meters), turn right, then back up and park slightly to the left of its old spot, Watkins said.

"You will definitely see tracks," he said.

The test drive is part of a health checkup the rover has been undergoing since arriving on Aug. 5. Eventually, the rover could roam hundreds of feet a day over the ancient crater where it landed.
Meanwhile, researchers discovered the damaged wind sensor while checking out instruments that Curiosity will use to check the Martian weather and soil.

The cause of the damage wasn't known, but one possibility is that pebbles thrown up by Curiosity's descent fell onto the sensor's delicate, exposed circuit boards and broke some wires, said Ashwin Vasavada, deputy project scientist for Curiosity.

A second sensor is operating and should do the job, but Vasavada said scientists may "have to work a little harder" to determine wind speed and direction, which are important factors that can determine when the rover is allowed to move.

"But we think we can work around that," he added.

Scientists also continued to test and calibrate Curiosity's 7-foot (2.1-meter)-long arm and its extensive tool kit — which includes a drill, a scoop, a spectrometer and a camera — in preparation for collecting its first soil samples and attempting to learn whether the Martian environment was favorable for microbial life.

Microsoft ready for Upgrade to Windows8

The window to upgrade to the next version of Microsoft's computer operating system is now open.

Microsoft Corp. began accepting orders for Windows 8 this week. The new operating system won't be delivered until Oct. 26, however.

People who own a personal computer running earlier versions of Windows can buy the revamped system for $14.99 to $39.99.
Windows 8

The lower price is being offered to PC owners who have bought a machine powered by Windows 7 since June 2. Everyone else with a Windows-based computer will have to pay the higher price if they want to upgrade.

The chance to upgrade at these prices expires Jan. 31.

Microsoft designed Windows 8 so it can power both traditional PCs and tablet computers in response to the iPad's popularity.

Retro/Grade’s Backwards Battle Begins Today

Retro/Grade's Backwards Battle Begins today.  PlayStation announce it officially on their blog post.

This is how they posted on their Official Blog:
Retro/Grade’s Backwards Battle

Now that you’re all caught up, we can get started. It’s been a long journey since our first post about Retro/Grade on the PS.Blog over three years ago. We’ve worked very hard creating the best game we possibly can since then — if you saw the three year old screenshots, you’ll notice that it’s barely recognizable as the polished product you see today. Besides all the visual polish we added — like jaw-dropping effects and full HD 1080p rendering at 60 frames-per-second with anti-aliasing — we’ve added a ton of content.

Retro/Grade’s Backwards Battle
Although we have a campaign mode, challenge mode is really the star of Retro/Grade. It’s where the real meat of the game lies. In challenge mode, you are presented with a galaxy map, and you go through playing various challenges that are based on the campaign levels, but with various twists and rule changes. For example, in some of the challenges, the music is sped up, which naturally makes completing the level more difficult. We also have challenges that require you to reach certain score targets, have trickier patterns, and plenty more! There are 130 challenges spanning a map filled with secret paths, warps, and rewards.

What kind of rewards, you ask? All sorts! We have cheats that turn on fun gameplay features like big heads, disco lighting, a film noir look, and more. We also have 11 unlockable ships, some of which feature characters from other indie games like Meat Boy, Minecraft, Octodad, and Go Home Dinosaurs. We also reward you by unlocking tracks in the music player. While that may not sound too interesting (especially if you bought the soundtrack), our music player is set up like a DJ deck with two turntables, which means you can scratch and mix the unlocked sounds to your heart’s content!

If challenge mode doesn’t sound like it interests you, campaign mode will keep you coming back for more. You can compete on one of our many leaderboards for the different songs and modes — don’t worry, we have separate leaderboards for guitar and DualShock controllers, just in case you feel that one control scheme has an advantage.

Retro/Grade is available today for $9.99, or in a bundle with the soundtrack for $14.99. The soundtrack, which is in AAC format and is copyable to a USB memory stick, is also available separately for $7.99. We have a demo available, so if you’re not yet completely sold on this reverse-shooter, now is your chance to try it out! Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you on the leaderboards!

NASA plans for a MARS Insight with JPL

As the Jet Propulsion Laboratory continues its work with the Mars rover Curiosity, NASA has given the go-ahead to another Red Planet mission. As The Times' Amina Khan reported:
NASA Insight with JPL
InSight — short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport — will use a lander to understand how Mars, Earth and other rocky planets were formed in the early days of the solar system.

Planned to launch in March 2016 and reach Mars six months later, the lander would operate for 720 days and give the Red Planet the equivalent of a doctor's physical — checking its pulse, gauging its reflexes and taking its temperature.
Khan discussed anticipation at NASA over Curiosity's upcoming first ride on the Mars surface. She also explained how the rover used its laser over the weekend on a nearby rock named Coronation, hitting the softball-size chunk with 30 pulses in 10 seconds.
With more than 1 million watts of power in each 5-billionths-of-a-second pulse, the laser shots from the  ChemCam instrument vaporized the rock into plasma. The device then used its spectrometers to analyze the  elemental composition.
Like the initial photos taken by Curiosity’s cameras, the laser exercise was meant to test whether ChemCam was working properly. But it could also provide some useful scientific insight. If the composition of the plasma seemed to change over those 30 pulses, then it could mean the laser was digging into successive layers of rock with each pulse.
Scientists and engineers at JPL selected the first drive-to spot, a place about 1,300 feet east-southeast from the rover's landing area called Glenelg, which is at the nexus of three different types of terrain. One of those types — layered bedrock — would be a tempting first target for Curiosity's drilling tool.

Iran's New Weapons & Missiles Unveiled

Iranian Missiles

Iran unveiled upgrades to six weapons on Tuesday, including a more accurate short-range missile, a more powerful naval engine and an airborne testing laboratory, Iranian media reported.

The hardware was presented at a ceremony marking Defense Industry Day and attended by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi.
Israel has said it is considering military strikes on Iran's nuclear sites if the Islamic Republic does not resolve Western fears it is developing atomic weapons technology, something Tehran denies.

Iran says it could hit Israel and U.S. bases in the region if it comes under attack. It has also threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, the neck of the Gulf through which 40 percent of the world's sea-borne oil exports pass, which would likely invite a military response from the United States.

Among the upgrades was a fourth-generation of the Fateh-110 missile, with a range of about 300 km (180 miles).

Iran said earlier this month it had successfully test-fired the new model, which it said was equipped with a more accurate guidance system.

"This missile is one of the most precise and advanced land-to-land ballistic missiles using solid fuel," Vahidi was quoted as saying by the Fars news agency. "In the last decade it has had a significant role in promoting the Islamic Republic of Iran's defense capabilities."

In July, Iran said it had successfully test-fired medium-range missiles capable of hitting Israel, and tested dozens of missiles aimed at simulated air bases.

It also presented a more powerful, 5,000-horsepower seaborne engine, the Bonyan-4, Fars quoted Vahidi as saying. A previous version had 1,000 horsepower, the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) said.

DOUBTS OVER CAPABILITIES
Military experts have cast doubt on Iran's claims of weapons advances, especially its assertions about its missile program, saying it often exaggerates its capabilities.

"The Fateh-110 has a crude guidance and control system that operates during the missile's ascent" rather than during final descent, said Michael Elleman, senior fellow for missile defense at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, in an e-mail.

"The Fateh-110 appears to lack the subsystems needed to effect terminal steering."
Iran also presented Armita, an "airborne laboratory" to help test aircraft launch systems and oxygen generation and train fighter pilots, Fars reported.

It was named after the daughter of Dariush Rezaeinejad, an Iranian scientist killed last year, Vahidi said, according to ISNA.

Iran believes agents working with foreign intelligence services including the American CIA and Israel's Mossad are behind the assassinations of several of its scientists.
